Stop Swinging For The Fence

In sales, we often romanticize the “grand slam”—the massive deal that catapults us to the top of the leaderboards, the one-call close that seems to defy reality. We spend countless hours chasing those high-profile, high-risk opportunities, convinced that true success only comes from swinging for the fences.

But what happens when those big swings result in misses? The pressure mounts, the pipeline dries up, and the motivation wanes.

The Secret of Consistency

The most successful sales professionals know a truth that many overlook: Small, consistent wins build lasting success far more reliably than sporadic, massive ones.

Think of your sales process not as a home run derby, but as a long, successful season. A great baseball team doesn’t win the championship solely on home runs; they win through consistent singles, getting people on base, and solid defense.

Why Small Wins Matter More

1. They Build Unstoppable Momentum

A small win could be:

  • Successfully booking that first discovery call after two follow-up emails.
  • Getting an internal champion to agree to a product demo.
  • Crafting a perfectly tailored, insightful value proposition.
  • Consistently hitting your daily/weekly outreach targets.

Every time you complete one of these small tasks, you get a shot of Dopamine, and that positive feeling fuels the next action. This compounding effect creates unstoppable momentum, making the big deals feel inevitable, not just lucky.

2. They Reduce Risk and Burnout

Chasing huge deals often means neglecting smaller, quicker wins that keep your pipeline healthy. When the huge deal falls through (and statistically, many do), you’re left with nothing.

Focusing on small wins means you have a steady stream of closed business, reducing the stress and financial risk associated with an “all-or-nothing” approach. This consistent success is the antidote to sales burnout.

3. They Lead to Better Skills and Process

A single home run doesn’t teach you how to hit. A consistent process of singles and doubles does.

Every small win is a feedback loop. Did that email subject line work? Did that specific question uncover a key pain point? By executing small tasks repeatedly, you naturally refine your methodology, making you a more skilled, precise, and effective closer when the real big opportunity arises.

💡 Your Game Plan for Consistent Wins

  1. Define Your “Singles” and “Doubles”: Break down your sales cycle into concrete, achievable daily and weekly actions. (e.g., “Send 10 personalized cold outreach emails,” “Book 3 discovery calls,” “Complete 1 internal cross-sell qualification.”)
  2. Celebrate the Small Victories: Don’t wait for the contract to close to feel successful. Acknowledge and celebrate moving a prospect from Stage 1 to Stage 2. This reinforces the positive behavior.
  3. Prioritize Process Over Outcome: Focus on doing the right things consistently (your inputs) rather than obsessing over the final number (the outcome). If you consistently execute your small wins, the big results will take care of themselves.

Stop wasting energy on the low-probability, high-stress pursuit of the massive, single-transaction score. Start stacking those small, manageable victories.

A continuous series of successful singles always beats a single, failed attempt at a home run. Build the habit of winning, and your career will transform.

If you’re sitting there thinking, “sounds great, how do I get my team to do this?” worry not, I got you. Below is a pic of what I created for a sales leader client recently. He sends these weekly, and adds the “why” in the Win Focus column. Steal this and use it to create your own task list for your reps.

Keep in mind, the key is to focus on inputs, activities that lead to the results we want in the end. Make these small, controllable things that your reps jump on quickly.

    Let’s Talk.

    • If your sales team is dropping price too quickly to win deals.
    • If your pipeline is filled with stalled opportunities and “maybes”.
    • If past trainings did not create a lasting change in behaviors.
