Think Like The Owner, Be The Owner

If you think your sales job is just a job, you’re doing it wrong. Sure, your employer may be cutting the checks, and providing you with some benefits, but treating a sales job like a nine-to-five where you punch in, do the bare minimum, and clock out, is leaving a mountain of money on the table. On top of that, you are going to stand out as a non performer.

The best sales professionals? They treat their job like it’s a business. Their business. And guess what? That mindset is what separates the top earners from the people just scraping by. So, if you’re ready to stop coasting and start crushing it, here’s how you do it.

1. Think Like an Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurs don’t wait around for things to happen; they make them happen. In sales, that means you’re not just sitting back, waiting for leads to fall into your lap—you’re hustling, networking, and creating opportunities. If you act like your own boss (even if you technically have one), you’ll start seeing results like a boss, too.

2. Invest in Yourself

Would a business owner rely only on company-provided training? Nope. They invest in courses, books, and mentorships. You should be doing the same. Get better at communication, persuasion, and handling objections. Sales is a skill, and skills need sharpening.

3. Build Your Brand

Your company’s name is on your business card, but your name is what customers remember. Are you the go-to expert in your industry? If not, you should be. Post on LinkedIn, create valuable content, and make sure your clients know you’re the real deal. People buy from people, not faceless corporations. People also are more prone to allow themselves to be influenced by authority, in other words, by experts.

4. Manage Your Pipeline Like It’s Your Profit and Loss Statement

Successful business owners track their revenue, expenses, and profits. In sales, your pipeline is your P&L. If you’re not keeping track of your leads, following up aggressively, and closing deals, you’re basically running a failing business (and your commission check will prove it). Same goes for activity, which is the real manifestation of a pipeline. Know what the financial value is of a call, a meeting, a proposal. Back into that math, so you are aware of your dashboard.

5. Deliver Unbelievable Customer Service

A great business isn’t just about acquiring customers; it’s about keeping them. Want repeat business and referrals? Go above and beyond. Be responsive, solve problems, and genuinely care about your clients. Treat every sale like the beginning of a long-term relationship, not a one-night stand. This has actually become easier in recent times. The baseline standard of customer service has gone so low, just showing up on time and sober already puts you in the top 50%. But people notice above and beyond customer service. Think of those amazing companies, Southwest Airlines, Nordstrom. How much business do they get from their service reputation.

6. Control Your Time Like a CEO

CEOs don’t waste time on pointless meetings and busy work. They focus on high-impact activities that drive revenue. You should be doing the same. If something isn’t helping you close deals, it’s a distraction. Cut it out. Yeah, some stuff isn’t going to get done on time. So what. No one gets fired for being efficient. I’d also suggest delegating what you can here. A virtual assistant is affordable for most people now. Hire out that expense report and data mining.

7. Take Ownership of Your Results

Business owners don’t blame the economy, the competition, or the “bad leads.” They adapt, pivot, and find a way to win. If your numbers aren’t where they should be, own it and fix it. No excuses. NO EXCUSES! Focus on what you can control and find a work around.

Your sales job is your business, whether you see it that way or not. The sooner you start thinking like an entrepreneur, the sooner you’ll start making entrepreneur-level money. So, are you going to keep treating this like just a job, or are you ready to build something great? Your commission check is waiting for your answer.

    Let’s Talk.

    • If your sales team is dropping price too quickly to win deals.
    • If your pipeline is filled with stalled opportunities and “maybes”.
    • If past trainings did not create a lasting change in behaviors.
